Kody's Story

Kody died on a Saturday morning. I understand that most stories start with the beginning, but I think that this story needs to start from the end. Kody was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, which is a nasty type of bone cancer, nearly 3 months ago. He was limited to using three legs, the affected leg was getting more swollen as the days went by, and he just seemed out of gas. He was our beloved dog, best friend, companion, protector, and champion. I started at the end, because the end was what touched my heart the most….

Pets are funny little guys or gals, and they serve many needs and fill a lot of holes in our lives. At the end, Kody woke up the champion in me that had been sleeping for some time. Rottweilers are known for their toughness, stoicism, companionship, and fierce loyalty. Kody demonstrated all of these, and they seemed to increase towards the end. They do say that your true qualities come out and shine during times of adversity, and his shone bright. Not once did he whine or cry, even though he must’ve been in incredible pain. Not once would he ever turn down a walk, even though it might only last 3 minutes. And even in the end, that sweet little boy couldn’t stand being more than a few feet away from us. He reminded me of the qualities we all hope for, the love we all wish we could give, and the character that I want to always display.

Yes, I know he was just a dog. He was my dog. One of my mantras has always been that God can teach me something from anything. God truly taught me a lot through the spirit and courage of my dog. Kody was ours from his 4th week on earth, and he made it one year and nine months to the day. He will be missed, and he will never be replaced. We love you Kody bear.
